Prayer Shawl

St. Paul's has its own Prayer Shawl Ministry where knitters meet once every two weeks at someone's home. Teachers are always available in someone hasn't knitted in a while or are a beginner. All are welcome to attend!

The purpose is to make shawls for people in nursing homes or hospice care, or are often given to people who have had life-changing events in their lives, both good and bad.  Sessions usually start with a Bible reading and contemplation.

Hospitality

Our Hospitality Committee is responsible for organizing parish receptions throughout the year as requested by the church office. These receptions typically follow a special musical presentation, guest lecture or parish family event, such as honoring confirmands, graduating seniors or the passing of a parish member.  The committee also coordinates refreshments after the 10 a.m. service.  Light meals such as soup and bread are frequently offered as part of many adult education programs.

Singles and Doubles

Singles and Doubles provides an evening of socializing for adult parishioners. Several times a year a host family, along with a co-host, will welcome parishioners into their homes. Beverages and hors d'oeuvres are usually brought by parishioners for a simple, yet fun evening of conversation. It is a great way to get to know people and connect in a meaningful way. Newcomers are encouraged to come and by calling the church office, we can arrange a ride or directions for you.

Newcomers

If you are a newcomer to one of our services, there will be greeters at the door to welcome you, answer questions and help you find nursery and Sunday School rooms. We also have a 'guest register' book in the Narthex for you to leave your name, phone number and more.

After the 10 o'clock service, we provide refreshments and an opportunity for peopleto mingle. We want you to feel welcome without being overwhelmed. Please let us know if you would like follow-up, such as a phone call from a parishioner or rector, or a visit. There are also welcome cards in each of the pews if you would like to fill one out and place it in the collection plate.

We are a family-friendly church and want you to feel welcome to bring your children. St. Paul's also provides times for families to get together such as pot luck dinners, game nights, participation in an outreach project or other church event. We look forward to getting to know you and your family.

Pastoral Care

Pastoral care is central to fulfilling the high call of Jesus to "love one another as I have loved you." At St. Paul's, pastoral care is manifested in several ways.

Licensed Eucharistic Ministers - distribute the Eucharist at the communion rail during Sunday services and bring the Eucharistic elements (bread and wine) to shut-ins, those in the hospital or extended car facilities.

Laying on of Hands and Prayers for Healing - sometimes offered after a Sunday service, where everyone is invited to the altar rail for the ancient ritual of laying on of hands and prayers for healing. There is also a Eucharist and healing service every Wednesday at 7 a.m.

Ministry of Prayer - at St. Paul's, we take prayer in all of its various forms seriously.

A parish prayer list is maintained and included in both Sunday and Wednesday services.

  • A prayer request book is kep in the Narthex of the church where everyone is invited to make individual prayer requests.
  • We pray for the spiritual leadership in our local, state and national governments, the Anglican as well as individual families in our congregation.
  • We pray for national concerns and local, national and international crises.
Please call the church office (973) 635-8085 if you would like a prayer or a visit.  Please let our church office know if someone you know is:
  • about to have a diagnostic procedure, surgery or admission to the hospital, or is gravely ill
  • experiencing marital discord, divorce or domestic violence
  • recently widowed
  • alone or lonely
  • suddenly unemployed or in a vocational transition
  • seeking discernment about your vocational ministry
or for any other reason.

Outreach

At St. Paul's, outreach is one way we answer the question posed by the young man to Jesus when he asked, "Who is my neighbor?" (Luke 10:25-28). We take seriously what Jesus taught about the definition of our neighbor. As a congregation, we strive to fulfill the great prophetic call to "do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God" (Micah 6:8) by serving our neighbors "near and far".  Beyond the collective efforts of St. Paul's Church, we encourage and support our members in their individual commitments to outreach.
