St. Paul's Our Community
St. Paul’s is a mid-sized, suburban church in the northern New Jersey community of Chatham. Located 33 miles west of Manhattan, Chatham has a combined population of about 18,000 in the township and borough. Although they have separate municipal governments, the township and borough share the post office, library and school system. Apart from Main Street and its welcoming village of small shops, restaurants and businesses, Chatham is primarily residential. Its people include those who commute to New York City and New Jersey businesses, local professionals and merchants, homemakers and retired persons. Manhattan Direct train service, bus services and easy access to the highway network provide the community with convenient transportation to Newark Airport and the entire metropolitan area. Chatham schools are excellent, with a high percentage of high school graduates attending college. In addition, three local universities – Fairleigh Dickinson, Drew University and St. Elizabeth’s – offer educational opportunities to residents and act as a resource for lectures and adult forums throughout the community. The Library of the Chathams offers children’s programs as well as lectures and exhibits for adults. Expanded service is offered through the library’s membership in the Morris-Union Federation. This gives library users access to collections in six other towns and two universities. Throughout the year, a variety of cultural events are available in Chatham and neighboring towns. The area offers many outdoor recreational facilities such as the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Loantaka Park and other parks with playing fields, playgrounds and picnic grounds.
